I'm sooo tempted to start tricking out my AR... HELP!

I've had my AR for a while know and can't fight the urge to make it look something like this...

Sorry. You'll get no help from me. I started pimping mine out the week after I got it.

Pfft! A real woman would have already stocked the basement with cases of Port and Aussie! You know how we love to accessorize.

Heck yeah! You're gonna need them if you're looking to stock up on .308.

kolya,
Seriously, why do you own an AR? If it's for fun, do whatever you want with it! If it's serious, whatever you do that makes it shoot better _for you_ is worth the effort.

A Geisele 2 stage trigger is steep bucks, but you'll swear its a totally new gun. Swap out the barrel for a Kreiger 1:7.7 twist (with matching bolt for headspace) and it'll hit whatever you can hit with a .308 to just about as far (use 77 gr Sierra matchkings or like kind). Between the two, you'll hold your own against just about anyone, assuming you can shoot straight!

don't forget good sights, glass or peep...

If you're not going to give it the full length barrel for the powder charge to accellerate the bullet, then you've got a really short range weapon.

The .223 typically has the same energy at the barrel as a .308 at 250-300 yards. Since no one seems to argue that the .308 is enough gun at 300 yards, why do they tend to think the .223 isn't enough, at any distance?

Like all tools, you use the right one for the job. A .223 carbine is great for indoor engagements where swinging the gun around is more important than 250 yards one-shot-kills. Even if the .223 is marginal at 250 yards, it's irrelivent if the guns meant for indoor shots.

Hence the question about what the guns for. Plinking, indoor defense, sniping, and anti-armor all have different needs... (cause there's times when even the .308 just ain't enough gun!)
